The Jucumari Foundation’s goal is to contribute to humanitarian and environmental efforts across Latin America. To accomplish this, we seek to fund efforts that:

In partnership with the Human Rights Organization, the Jucumari Foundation aims to promote democracy in closed societies. By leveraging the expertise of activists on the ground and advocating for protecting fundamental rights and freedoms in regions where democratic principles are under threat, collaborative efforts strive to empower marginalized communities, amplify their voices, and catalyze positive change toward a more open and inclusive society.

What we support
Across the forests and high mountains of South America wanders the jucumari, the Andean bear: a solitary, silent giant whose way of life protects everything around it. Where the bear lives, forests stand. It spreads seeds as it roams, and its vast territory shelters hundreds of other species, from macaws to monkeys to the smallest orchids of the cloud forest. Biologists call it an umbrella species: keep the jucumari safe, and everything living beneath it is kept safe too. We took its name as our mandate: to be, for civil society across the region, what the jucumari is for the forest.
The Jucumari Foundation is a private foundation based in the United States, recognized under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. Since 2023, we have supported independent organizations across Bolivia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and beyond. Some are established institutions; others are small teams doing urgent work on modest budgets. They protect elections and treat the wounded. They teach human rights, investigate threats to wildlife, paint hospital wards, and rebuild trust after political violence. What they share is a conviction we hold as our own: that ordinary citizens, organized and disciplined, can defend their rights, their communities, and their democracies. No one is coming to do it for them. We help them do it themselves.
